artificial turf installation guide
Tools required - gloves, shovel, wheelbarrow, rake, screed rake, plate compacter, sharp cutting tool, glue spreading trowel, hard bristle broom (or powerbrusher if available).
Materials - synthetic turf, adhesive, joining tape, anchor pins, sand/rubber infill, road base, water.
STEPS
- Mark out designated area ready for installation. Remember each turf section that requires joining should be laying in the same direction.
- Ensure any unwanted reticulation has been capped or taken out.
- Remove any existing vegetation including any lawn, rocks or weeds.
- We recommend, depending on soil type, around 40mm of crushed road base or limestone to provide a sufficient foundation for the Synthetic turf.
- Level and compact the base several times until firm ensuring the site is kept moist. We recess the edge of the turf down a minimum of 25mm.
- Once you’re happy the site is level and firm enough, roll out the turf and cut to size.
- Where a join between the rolls is required a gap of around 1-5mm is ideal. When cutting along the seem of the turf try to cut as close to the stitching as possible.
- Once the lawn is cut to size fold the lawn rolls back where the joins are required allowing enough room to roll out the joining tape.
- Apply adhesive to the joining tape with a 3mm notched trowel or spreading tool, and allow around 5-10mins, depending on weather conditions, for the glue to tack properly.
- Once the adhesive is tacky, roll the turf back on the tape. Take care with this step to avoid the turf filaments becoming trapped under the edges.
- After successfully joining the edges apply pressure/weight to ensure a sufficient bond takes place.
- Start spreading infill over the turf at a rate of around 5kg/m2 (or around 5mm thick)
- Brush in the infill against the grain of the turf. Be sure to allow sufficient time for the adhesive to properly bond (we recommend leaving it over night)
- Sit back, relax and enjoy your new Lawn area.
